CHORE

9/19/09 - We have decided to do a Fall
program this year - which will involve putting landscapes to bed for
the season, planting mums and/or pansies.  There have been
offers to help with this type of work, and we hope to put
more volunteers to work on it.

8/3/09 - We have completed almost all of our
projects for this year - see the photos below -

6/23/09 - Projects 05-09, 06-09, and 13-09 are complete,
with the rest just waiting for volunteers.

6/10/09 - We did CHORE homes 02-09 and 03-09 last week.

5/15/09 - We now have the first 12 homes of
2009 presurveyed and ready to go.  All are fairly simple,
with estimates averaging 3 people and 1 1/2 hours.  Call Jon
at (248) 356-2281 or Odette at (248) 357-4228 to
sign on to help.

"CHORE" is a program that assists elderly and/or disabled low income

residents fix up the front of their homes, so that they may be more secure in the knowledge

that they are not letting their neighbors down.  We do this

to promote people staying in their own homes longer.

This is meant for people who can't get out to weed or trim their bushes

and can't afford to hire it done.  We get the names and addresses

from the City of Southfield CHORE coordinator, so they

are pre-qualified for charitable

consideration.

The Club receives funding for about 10 to 15 percent

of the total program cost through the City's

HUD Community Development Block Grant.

Generally, we recieve a list of eligible residents who have requested the service

and then we visit the homes to put together an estimate of requirements.  The homes are then

reviewed at a Club meeting and a member would agree to "sponsor" one or

two homes.  Most times members help each other out, and we occasionally

have volunteers who have expressed interest in helping.  We try

to keep the jobs at 1 to 1 1/2 hours for two to three people.  Weeding, edging,

bush trimming, planting annuals or perennials, and mulching as necessary

to brighten up the front yard.

The Club provides all of the tools, materials, and

plants for the project to the home.

CHORE homes were the Club's first major program,  and

the work is minimal but extremely satisfying.  We do what we can

with hand tools and a limited budget and time frame, but we are doing

it for people in our own community who truely need help.
